The region of eastern Uttar Pradesh comprises districts Bahraich, Gonda, Basti, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Ballia, Azamgarh, Faizabad, Sultanpur, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Mirzapur, and Sonbhadra.
Eastern Uttar Pradesh is one of the poorest developed regions of India. Some of the key factors responsible for the comparatively poor development of eastern Uttar Pradesh are-
Historical reason; Historically, from British time, and also after independence also central and state governments have neglected the development initiatives and allocation of resources.
Lack of Infrastructure; The region has lack of inadequate transportation infrastructure, which limits its connectivity with other parts of the country, that hinders economic development.
Low Agricultural Productivity; Eastern Uttar Pradesh’s economy is primarily agriculture-based, and agriculture in this region has low productivity due to a lack of irrigation facilities, and lack of modern agriculture techniques.
Poor Quality of Education- Eastern Uttar Pradesh region has a low literacy rate in UP; the region faces low enrolment rates, high drop-out rates, and poor quality of education. This limits opportunities for youth.
Social Factors; Social factors like caste discrimination, gender inequality, and poverty are prevalent in the region.
Solutions for development of the Eastern Uttar Pradesh could include the following-
Investment in Infrastructure; Modern infrastructure like roads, highways, railways, and airports are needed for modern development as it facilitates business and promotes economic development.
Investment in Agriculture; Investment in irrigation facilities, quality of seeds, and fertilizer are needed; this could lead to higher agricultural productivity, which will promote economic growth.
Investment in education and skill Development; Investment in the quality of education and skill development is needed to provide opportunities to youth and improve employability.
Good Governance; Good governance like transparency, accountability, and participation should be used in decision-making. This will promote the efficient utilization of resources for development initiatives.
Social inclusion; Social factors like caste discrimination, gender inequality, and poverty need to be addressed; social inclusion will enable more people to participate in regions’ economic development.
